Did you know that each month, the BG Restaurant on the seventh floor of the Bergdorf Goodman department store on Fifth Avenue at 58th serves up 2,500 plates of its signature Gotham Salad? Rumour has it that entire shopping trips are also planned around a lunch of this one dish alone, and that there are even customers who have it delivered to their offices daily.
The recently published Bergdorf Goodman Cookbook written by Laura Silverman with an introduction by writer and designer Hal Rubenstein and quirky illustrations by Konstantin Kakanias, brings the Bergdorf dining experience and recipes to life, albeit without the sweeping Central Park views or that uptown ambience. It’s split into six sections, covering cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, soups and starters, salads, entrées and desserts and contains all the perennial favourites and seasonal specialities from its menu, including the famous Gotham Salad, Lobster Mac and Cheese and The BG – its signature hazelnut-chocolate dessert, to name just a few. Designers, editors, writers and stylists from the fashion world including some famous names – Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Bobbi Brown, as well as Bergdorf’s own senior vice president Linda Fargo and the store’s octogenarian personal shopper Betty Halbreich – also contribute their favourite dishes.
