Would you go for breakfast at Tiffany’s? I don’t mean stand outside the flagship Tiffany & Co. shop on Fifth Avenue clutching the pastry-in-a-bag and stewed deli filter coffee a la Hepburn circa 1961. I mean, actually eat breakfast inside the shop. At a table, from a plate, with cutlery. Well, now you can, at Tiffany & Co.’s new Blue Box Cafe on the fourth floor.
As a person excited by discovering hidden local haunts and with a slight aversion to standing in line for major sights or the latest fad restaurant (only to be slightly disappointed), I’m not sure I will. For one, I have my West Village brunch favourites. Second, I don’t think I’d get in. According to this recent The New Yorker article, frenzied fans compete far ahead to book tables and queue overnight around the block, only to queue up more once inside! Insane.
I’ll admit though, this doesn’t mean I’m not ever so slightly curious, so today I thought we could have a peek inside. Let’s call this blog post an invitation to skip the breakfast queue if you like, and enjoy a virtual snoop around Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Box Cafe, with the place all to ourselves!
The decor is all trademarked Tiffany Blue, designed to make you feel like you’re inside a Tiffany & Co. jewellery box. There are Tiffany Blue chairs. Tiffany Blue plates. Tiffany Blue banquettes. Tiffany Blue salt and pepper pots. Even Tiffany Blue decorations on cakes. Tiffany Blue everything. It’s chic if you like that kind of thing. I think I’m more intrigued by the view from the window.
The food itself: guess what? It’s not cheap. Breakfast is set at $29 and includes all the obvious NYC staples like bagels and lox (that’s smoked salmon to us folk across the pond), as well as more fancy options like truffled eggs. Lunch costs $39 and includes a soup or salad starter, a main course consisting of sandwiches… and more salad. The tea time service with fine teas, sweets, and finger sandwiches for $49. You can even order The Charles Lewis Tiffany Club Sandwich, named after the Tiffany’s founder, a Fifth Avenue Salad, a Blue Box Café cake…

Me? For now, I think I’ll stand outside with a coffee…
